The main objective of the SAT-FIRE (SATellite data Fusion and Imaging Resolution Enhancement for coastal areas) project is to improve the spatial resolution challenges of current Earth Observation Satellite systems by data from low spatial resolution, high temporal resolution Sentinel-3 data, and high spatial resolution, low temporal resolution Landsat 8 data. This will allow for more accurate predictions of marine currents, aiding divers, search and rescue operations and coastal monitoring.
Through the Current Monitor app, ground-truth data will be gathered through crowdsourcing from divers. The data will include sea surface temperatures and sea current locations, strengths and directions. The collected data will then be correlated to measured satellite data and the output of a predictive hydrodynamical model.
